Guest Post: Private and Public Sectors Have Role in Fixing Infrastructure

By |2023-05-18T20:42:59+00:00August 7, 2013|Mobility 21, News|

by Janet Kavinoky | Aug 6, 2013 | Originally posted at www.FreeEnterprise.com/infrastructure In their Wall Street Journal op-ed historians Larry Schweikart and Burton Folsom use history to paint a broad brush against government infrastructure investments and assume that entrepreneurs are the only solution. Reality is more nuanced than that. It's not either/or. Our modern economy (and the jobs supported by it) has infrastructure needs that require both private- and public-sector involvement. There is much in the category of "infrastructure" that can and should be private sector owned and driven:  energy, broadband and telecommunications, freight railroads.  In these instances, the private sector is both infrastructure and service provider.  The U.S. Chamber has argued-see our Water Is Your Business  campaign in partnership with the National Association of Water Companies-that there are infrastructure sectors where there needs to be much more private sector investment and management.  Drinking water, wastewater, highways, public transportation, airports, waterways and ports-these are [...]

Playing ‘Mad Libs’ on Infrastructure

By |2023-05-18T20:42:59+00:00April 3, 2013|Mobility 21, News|

Guest blog post by Janet Kavinoky, Vice President, Americans for Transportation Mobility Coalition and Executive Director, Transportation & Infrastructure, U.S. Chamber of Commerce POLITICO and a few Members of Congress raised doubts as to whether America's infrastructure is truly "crumbling." The implication from the article: things aren't as bad as some "politicians and pundits" make them out to be.  The article is an interesting juxtaposition given this piece by Ashley Halsey of the Washington Post describing that the Capital Beltway is rotting from the core outwards. The road looks OK, but it is degrading - fast - in ways we cannot always see. Why do transportation advocates talk about "crumbling" infrastructure to the press, and in our handouts and speeches?  Because it is a shorthand way to convey the urgency and the importance of continued investment in maintaining, modernizing, and expanding our roads and bridges, public transportation including buses and trains, airports and air traffic control, [...]
