(Oct. 20, 2008) Marian Bergeson, the first woman to serve as both a California state Assembly member and a state Senator; Robert A. Wolf, former California Undersecretary of Business, Transportation and Housing and past chairman of the California Transportation Commission, and Mark Pisano, former executive director of the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), today were honored with 2008 Mobility 21 Awards.

The coveted annual awards recognize individuals or organizations that have improved mobility through vision and leadership

The awards were presented at the 7th Annual Southern California Transportation Summit, hosted by Mobility 21, which this year took place at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Nearly 500 attended the event, which is a gathering of transportation advocacy groups and individuals representing five Southern California counties with a population of more than 17 million.

Marian Bergeson was presented with the 2008 Mobility 21 Award to an elected official for her outstanding service to Orange County and regional mobility. Among her many accomplishments, Bergeson led efforts to consolidate the seven separate transportation entities in her area into one -- the Orange County Transportation Authority -- and helped secure approval of two sales tax measures that have provided more than $16 billion for infrastructure projects in Orange County.

Robert A. Wolf was named winner of the 2008 Mobility 21 Award for a member of the private sector. Wolf has been a driving force in business, government and politics in Riverside County and Inland Southern California for more than 35 years and a strong advocate for the region's transportation system. In addition to his leadership in discussions for renewing the half cent sales tax initiatives in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, Wolf was a major supporter of SB 45, which dedicates 70 percent of state gas tax revenues to county transportation agencies.

Mark Pisano was presented with the 2008 Mobility 21 Lifetime Achievement Award for his tireless work on key transportation matters in Southern California during his 27 years with SCAG. Among his many contributions to mobility, Pisano worked with officials to develop the strategy that led to the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority projects. And he has been a pioneer in new transportation concepts for the five-county region, including telecommuting, ridesharing, private sector financing and alternative pricing mechanisms -- all in an effort to find new ways to reduce congestion.

The Mobility 21 awards honor individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the transportation community and/or have brought together various stakeholders to advance mobility in Southern California.
