5 REASONS TRANSPORTATION FUNDING MATTERS TO YOU

CREATING JOBS, JOBS, JOBS

Improving our transportation network creates a wide variety of skilled public and private sector jobs. In fact, for every $1 billion invested in transportation infrastructure, 18,000 jobs are created. Add to that the workers needed to maintain and operate our highway and transit systems, and you have a significant economic engine for our region.

MOVING COMMERCE

A well-planned and well-maintained transportation infrastructure is a regional asset that attracts and retains businesses who employ workers. When good can flow and commuters spend less time sitting in gridlock, our economy prospers. A dedicated federal goods movement funding program is necessary to improve our aging infrastructure in order to keep up with the commerce demands of the nation.

ENHANCING SAFETY

A transportation system in good repair reduces accidents. Investments in new technologies like Positive Train Control will make traveling on our systems even safer. Fixing chokepoints and bottlenecks on our highways reduces the incidence of collisions. Pedestrian crossings that are well-lit and have adequate markings and signage protect our children.

CLEANING OUR ENVIRONMENT

Transit projects are essential to improving our air quality, meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets and protecting our water quality. Climate change or energy legislation without a provision for transit funding misses the mark. Legislation should include funding for the development of low emission technologies. A transition away from the gas tax toward an alternative user-free system is needed in the long-term to keep our roads and transit systems maintained.

IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE

The only way we will see transportation funding grow is for all transportation modes to work together. A system that can give motorists and transit riders options and integrates well together creates desirable and livable communities. Pedestrian and bicycle improvements are important, but so are highway expansions. We need all of the above to leave a better world for our kids. It’s all about more time spent living and less time spent sitting in traffic.
