During Mobility 21’s annual advocacy trip to Washington, D.C. next week, leaders will advocate for increased federal investment in goods movement infrastructure. Mobility 21 Urges Congress to Invest in America’s Trade Gateway During Mobility 21’s annual advocacy trip to Washington, D.C. next week, Southern California’s leading transportation and business stakeholders will join together to advocate for increased federal funding for transportation and innovative tools to maximize local investment in infrastructure. Federal funding to improve and maintain Southern California’s aging goods movement infrastructure will take top billing during the advocacy trip. More than 43 percent of the nation’s containerized imports enter the Ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles, Hueneme and San Diego — creating jobs, income and tax revenue in all 50 states. Given Southern California’s role as America’s trade gateway, Mobility 21 members will advocate for federal investment to improve the flow of trade to the rest of the nation, as well as to mitigate the congestion and air quality issues that are caused by [...]

Secretary LaHood Stepping Down It’s official. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today that he will step down from his position and not serve a second term. “We helped jumpstart the economy and put our fellow Americans back to work with $48 billion in transportation funding from the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009, and awarded over $2.7 billion in TIGER grants to 130 transportation projects across the nation,” said LaHood in a statement. “We have made unprecedented investments in our nation’s ports. And we have put aviation on a sounder footing with the FAA reauthorization, and secured funding in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act to help states build and repair their roads, bridges and transit systems.” LaHood confirmed that he will stay at the department as long is it takes to find a successor. Mobility 21’s Top 12 Transportation Moments of 2012 This year, Mobility 21 continued to expand its network to help bring investment to Southern California’s transportation system. With your help, we influenced important legislation and celebrated several milestone moments: Mobility 21’s advocacy resulted in key policy points incorporated in the long-awaited federal transportation bill, MAP-21, namely the inclusion of a national freight movement policy, the Breaking Down Barriers initiative and the expansion of the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) for credit-worthy projects. Mobility 21 successfully advocated for Senate Bill 1225 to bring local control and better service to the Los Angels-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) corridor, the nation’s second busiest intercity passenger rail corridor. Mobility 21 supported the release of Proposition 1A funds to help improve commuter rail in Southern California for projects like the Regional Connector Transit Corridor Project connecting three light rail lines through downtown Los Angeles, railroad grade separations on State College Boulevard, Ball Road and [...]

Mobility 21 Urges Support for LA County’s Measure J With the election less than two weeks away, the final push to support Los Angeles County’s ballot initiative to extend the half-cent sales tax for transportation is in full swing. In 2008, Los Angeles County voters approved a 30-year half-cent sales tax to provide local resources to finance new transportation projects and advance those already in the pipeline. However, not all projects are fully funded and some won’t be completed until the end of the 30 year period. Measure J on the November ballot would extend the sales tax for another 30 years, to 2069. The passage of Measure J would allow Metro to bond against the forecasted revenue generated during the additional 30 years and accelerate the construction of up to seven transit and eight roadway projects. Click here to view the project map.
