Playing ‘Mad Libs’ on Infrastructure

By |2023-05-18T20:42:59+00:00April 3, 2013|Mobility 21, News|

Guest blog post by Janet Kavinoky, Vice President, Americans for Transportation Mobility Coalition and Executive Director, Transportation & Infrastructure, U.S. Chamber of Commerce POLITICO and a few Members of Congress raised doubts as to whether America's infrastructure is truly "crumbling." The implication from the article: things aren't as bad as some "politicians and pundits" make them out to be.  The article is an interesting juxtaposition given this piece by Ashley Halsey of the Washington Post describing that the Capital Beltway is rotting from the core outwards. The road looks OK, but it is degrading - fast - in ways we cannot always see. Why do transportation advocates talk about "crumbling" infrastructure to the press, and in our handouts and speeches?  Because it is a shorthand way to convey the urgency and the importance of continued investment in maintaining, modernizing, and expanding our roads and bridges, public transportation including buses and trains, airports and air traffic control, [...]

Mobility 21 Warns Against West Coast Port Shutdown

By |2023-05-18T20:42:59+00:00December 10, 2011|Mobility 21, News|

Social media outlets and law enforcement report that organizers of the “West Coast Port Shutdown” are planning to gather at the Harry Bridges Park near the Queen Mary on the morning of Monday, Dec. 12. This group, an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement, has made a call to shutdown what they are referring to as “Wall Street on the Waterfront” — including the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. While we can’t predict the exact magnitude and impact the group will have, it is clear that a potential day-long shutdown at the ports could be devastating to workers and businesses who rely on efficient transportation of goods at the ports. Everything we consume on a daily basis, including the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the items we use to build or repair anything, relies on business done at the ports. [...]

Did you run any errands in the past week? Maybe to Target, Kohl’s or even Lowe’s? If you’re like me, no weekend is complete without a trip to Target to pick up a few things. My husband and I are remodeling our house, so date nights usually end up at Lowe’s or Home Depot to pick up supplies for our next project. But how many people have stopped to think about how all those conveniently packaged and affordable items end up on those shelves? Introducing the Freight Fairy. With a flick of the wand, hundreds of toothbrushes and blenders land on the shelves of Target and dozens of lawnmowers and power tools line the aisles of Home Depot. Enter record scratching noise here. If only it were that easy! An astonishing 43% of all seaborne cargo imported to the US (you know, all that stuff you [...]

10th Anniversary Summit in the Rearview Mirror: What Stood Out

By |2023-05-18T20:42:59+00:00September 13, 2011|Mobility 21, News|

Now that the dust has settled from the 2011 Southern California Transportation Summit hosted by Mobility 21, I can reflect a little on this year's event, and start to dream about how to make your experience next year that much better.  So we tried a little something new this year: interactive polling in the general sessions.  We relied on a technology called PollEverywhere  that utilizes your own cell phone, smart phone or tablet device.  On the one hand it was low cost for us and most folks these days are used to texting or tweeting, so we thought it would give the great majority of the attendees the chance to weigh in on some key issues. On the other hand, it does take a little time to get used to how to answer the questions, and that might have been a bit of a distraction for folks. [...]
